JOHNSON Vt.- A quick look back on the 2018 Northern Vermont University-Johnson women's tennis season.
The NVU-Johnson women's tennis team finished with an overall record of 4-8, competing against high level competition was something that the Badgers did on a weekly basis. Competing in matches against the likes of Castleton University, Plymouth State, Husson University, Plattsburgh State and Division II Saint Michaels College.
The Badgers had dominating performances in all of their wins this season defeating their opponents by scores of 9-0. With the impressive conference wins the Badgers earned the #3 spot with a 2-2 conference record going into the North Atlantic Conference tournament. The Badgers would face #2 Lesley University and ultimately lost by a score of 5-1.
Head Coach Michele Whitmore enjoyed the season that she had with the team and reflected on the season with the following: "As a team we reached every goal except one this season. Hard work, dedication and team support got us there."
Freshman Elizabeth Chitambar (Newport, Vt.) started the season off strong earning NAC Rookie of the Week and Player of the Week in week one of competition. She was undefeated in singles play for the first half of the season.
Junior Grace Page (Bennington,Vt.) earned First Team All-Conference Singles and was the #1 singles player for the Badgers throughout the majority of the season.
Northern Vermont-Johnson graduate student Mikayla Messier (Sheldon, Vt.) earned the prestigious Senior Scholar Athlete award by virtue of impressive academic success and contribution to the tennis team. Messier distinguished herself with five semesters on the Dean's List in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program and is currently carrying a 3.86 GPA as a graduate student working toward a Master of Fine Arts (M.F. A) degree in Studio Arts. Messier was also awarded NAC All-Tournament Team and the Sportsmanship Award for the Badgers.
Head Coach Michele Whitmore believes "We missed a few opportunities during key matches that might have made a difference but when I look back at the season, this team experienced many successes on the court and gained friendships that will last a lifetime".
