Johnson State Hosts Tri-Match, Split the Day

JOHNSON, VT. – The Johnson State College women's volleyball team hosted a tri-match and split the day with a 3-1 loss to Paul Smith's College in the first game, and a 3-0 win over the College of Saint Joseph in the second. The tri-match was played at Carter Gym on the campus of Johnson State College.

The Badgers record moves to 1-2 on the season following the tri-match.

MATCH 1

The Badgers started strong, collecting a 25-20 opening set win. The Bobcats battled back, dominating the second set on route to a 25-12 win. Johnson State hung around in the third set, before Paul Smith's pulled away to take it 25-18. In the fourth and final set, Johnson threatened to push for a fifth set, but were unable to keep pace with the Bobcats and ultimately fell 25-20.

STATS LEADERS

Breanna Laughlin (San Jacinto, Calif.) led all scorers with 19 kills and chipped in an ace and five digs. Kimberly Reville (Burke, N.Y.) added ten kills, three aces, and a match-high seven digs.  Laurel Hubbert-Severance (Hinesburg, Vt.) led the Badgers with ten assists to go along with two kills.

MATCH 2

The Badgers jumped out to an early 10-3 lead in the first set, but the Saints came storming back to bring the set to 17-14 in favor of Johnson. Johnson pulled away, however, for a 25-18 first set win. Johnson State again started quickly in the second set, but allowed St. Joseph to hang around for most of the set before pulling away with a 25-21 win. Johnson dominated the third set, holding the Saints to just seven points as they cruised to a 25-7 set win.

STATS LEADERS

The Badger offense ran through Hubbert-Severance, who recorded 27 assists in the match. Reville was superb on the serve with 11 aces. Laughlin topped her first match performance, recording 20 kills.

NEXT UP

The Badgers will play another tri-match this Friday, September 9 in Canton, N.Y., first taking on St. Lawrence at 4:00 PM followed by a match with Southern Vermont at 6:00 PM.
