Badgers Route Spartans to 3-0 Road Win

CASTLETON, Vt.-The Northern Vermont University-Johnson women's volleyball program earned a 3-0 win over Castleton University on Tuesday evening in Glenbrook Gymnasium.

The Badgers controlled most of the evening as they completed the three-set sweep over the Spartans. NVU-Johnson took the opening two sets by final scores of 26-24 before closing out the match in the third set with a 25-21 win.

It was a collective effort for the Badgers as Aleesia Smith, Nikola Knapova, Porsche Johnson and Lauren Havill each registered eight or more kills on the night, with Havill leading the way with nine kills. Freshman Mason Lores had an impressive night racking up 32 assists and six service aces.

The Badgers opened up the first set with a strong 10-0 lead before the Spartans began to crawl their way back. Mid way through the set the Badgers took a commanding 18-6 lead and capitalized after a Spartan error to extend the lead to 20-6. But it was Badger errors that allowed Castleton to make a push to get back within five points. It was Lores and a service ace from Brooke Scheier that closed set one by a final score of 26-24.

In the second stint of action neither team could pull ahead as the set went back and forth knotting the score at 10-10. The Badgers had the upper hand throughout the set. Castleton hung tough, as Madison Hamelink served the Spartans to keep the score even at 24-24. The Badgers reclaimed the serve and eventually won by a score of 26-24.

In the final set of the evening it was Castleton that came out strong taking a 12-8 lead. The Badgers then scored five straight points to take a 13-12 lead. As the set progressed the score was tied 20-20 before Havill earned her ninth kill of the evening and propelled the Badgers to a 25-21 win.

With the win the Badgers improve to 6-2 overall.
