NVU-Johnson SHAPE Facility Awarded RISE VT Grant

JOHNSON, Vt.- The Northern Vermont University SHAPE facility was awarded a grant from RISEVT. The grant will support group exercise and free adult swim lessons at Northern Vermont University-Johnson.

The RISEVT grant will continue to help enhance the group exercise program and open it up to more community members in Lamoille County. The grant will allow the purchase of 16 punch passes for classes for $90 a pass, a total of $1440.  The NVU-Johnson SHAPE facility will partner with local organizations such as Lamoille County Mental Health, Laraway School, and Lamoille Family Center to give these 16 punch passes (a combined total of 160 entrances to classes & the facility) to their clients in need of these classes due to financial stress, physical, emotional and or mental needs for exercises, comradery and community.  The funds will continue to support the budget for more group exercise classes to continue in the summer and throughout the 2019-2020 academic year at Northern Vermont University-Johnson.

The grant will also support free adult swim classes for the Lamoille County community. The overall cost has been calculated at $1160 for the following services. The university will offer 2 weeks of free adult swim lessons, including a minimum of six lessons. Group and private format will be available for the community while utilizing trained and certified community and student instructors, as well as recruiting and teaching new student instructors.  The program goal is to offer all adults free swimming goggles to enjoy the experience of swimming. The program will run with a free online pre-registration to help identify skill, barriers, and needs for each participant. The funds will purchase goggles and pay for instructor fees and advertising to promote the swim classes.  The program has space for 20 adults and will cap out at 30 adults total with volunteer instructor involvement and/or compatible ability groups of participants.
