Mercedes Durden Commits as Multi Sport Athlete for 2020

JOHNSON, Vt.- The Northern Vermont University-Johnson women's track and field and women's volleyball programs have tabbed a commitment from Mercedes Durden this past week.

Durden comes to Northern Vermont University-Johnson from Fuerth, Germany. Durden was a student-athlete at both Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) and Vilseck High School in Vilseck, Germany.

When arrived at NVU-Johnson Durden plans to pursue a degree in bio-premedical. "I chose NVU-Johnson because it reminded me of home," said Durden. "As soon as I walked onto the campus I felt like this is the place I needed to be. Overall, my experience during my visit at the university was everything I wanted in a school and that helped me make my decision."

Throughout her high school career both on the track and volleyball court Durden was a 1st place European champion in the discus, 1st regional Virginia 3A champion in the discus, 3rd overall in the state of Virginia for 3A high school discus, MVP for track and field, academic silver honor roll, torch club, and keystone club. Off the playing surface Durden was also the Vice President of the schools Art Club and a member of the African American History Club.

"I am excited to play for both Coach Woods and Coach John. I feel like working with both of the coaches can help me expand my knowledge and skills in both track & field and volleyball."

Durden is the second multi-sport athlete to commit to NVU-Johnson for the upcoming year. Both the NVU-Johnson women's track and field team and women's volleyball team will announce additional commitments in the near future.
