Golden Bears Win Big in Season Opener at Johnson State, 9-0, without Losing a Set

JOHNSON, Vt.--The Western New England University women's tennis opened the 2014 campaign with an impressive 9-0 road win at Johnson State College, never losing a set to the Badgers. Johnson State falls to 0-3 on its three-match homestand to begin the season.

Freshman Lauren Sell shined in her collegiate debut with wins at No. 1 singles and doubles for the Golden Bears. She dispatched junior Deanna Brandstetter at 6-1, 6-3 after teaming up with sophomore Joeanna Glantz in doubles to defeat Brandstetter and classmate Annette Kaminski, 8-6.

Freshman Christina D'Agostino also was a double winner, partnering with classmate Kim Phu for a No. 2 doubles win over freshmen Nicole Monick and Kali Covell before tripping up senior Michelle Mainus at No. 3 singles, 6-1 and 6-1.

"I am very impressed with the composure of our freshmen tonight both on and off the court," said Western New England coach Jennifer Kolins. "Everyone came out today ready to play and the past couple of weeks of practice and training showed through today. We also walked away knowing what we need to work on and know the focus has shifted to our conference season opener."

Western New England hits the court again at noon Saturday for the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener hosting Salve Regina University at the Volvo Outdoor Courts.
