All-Tournament Choice Dorothy O'Neill Leads Golden Bears to Bounce Back Win at USJ

WEST HARTFORD, Conn.--Freshman Dorothy O'Neill led five Golden Bears in double figures with 17 points as Western New England (1-1) won the third-place game over Johnson State, 73-61, at the 17th annual University of Saint Joseph Women's Basketball Tip-Off tournament at the O'Connell Center on Sunday.

Senior captain Samantha McCann scored 15 points and junior Chelsea Vujs had a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Golden Bears, who led 35-30 at halftime. Sophomore Emily Anderson came off the bench to net 10 points and eight rebounds. O'Neill averaged 16.0 points 46 percent shooting, including a 57.1 clip from 3-point range, 6.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals in her first two collegiate games to represent WNE on the USJ All-Tournament Team.

Sarah Voorhis scored a game-high 19 points to lead Johnson State, while Brittany Robertson scored 12 and Domonique Carter-Stanley had 11 for the Badgers who fall to 0-2.

Western New England held a slim 44-43 lead with just over 12 minutes to play, but O'Neill and junior Amanda Lopez--who finished with a career-best 11 points--had six points each in the closing stages and the Golden Bears shot 17-for-21 at the free throw line in the second half to seal the victory.

The Golden Bears outrebounded the Badgers 47 to 39 and scored 22 points off 21 JSC turnovers.

Western New England will have its home opener on Tuesday against crosstown rival Springfield College in a #Play4Jody non-conference game, tipping off at 5:30 p.m. at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.
