Austin Walters Named December 2019 Outstanding Student Athlete

JOHNSON, Vt.- On Wednesday afternoon senior Austin Walters was honored with the December 2019 Outstanding Student Athlete Award at the 2019 December graduation for Northern Vermont University-Johnson.

A four-sport athlete at Johnson and leader on the volleyball court and golf course, Walters was selected for this award for his outstanding accomplishments and commitment to NVU-Johnson athletics. Austin competed for four years on the varsity golf team and served as team captain for his last two seasons.  In 2016, Walters was named the North Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Year, capped off with a stellar performance at the NAC championships shooting a 76 on day 1 and 79 on day two.  His 155-stroke total tied him for 12th overall.

In 2018, Walters took on a much-deserved leadership role and led his team to a 4thplace finish out of 11 teams in the North Atlantic Conference Championships. He then capped off the 2018-2019 year earning medalist honors shooting an impressive 73 at the SUNY Adirondack Golf Invitational in the spring.

In the spring of 2019, Walters made his mark on the inaugural NVU-Johnson men's volleyball season by being named captain and earning him a starting position for the program. His athletic ability and competitive nature proved to be impactful as he finished the season ranked first in program history in kills, service aces, and is in the top five statistically in assists, blocks, and digs.

Austin Walters takes pride in being a Badger. His commitment to athletics along with his sportsmanship, and leadership qualities earned Walters a spot on the tennis court and lacrosse field. On the tennis court, Walters played both doubles and singles over 2 seasons. In his first year, he played both #1 and # 2 doubles and #2 singles.  In his senior season, he anchored the team at both #1 doubles and singles. Walters found time to compete in seven games on the lacrosse field throughout one year of competition as well.

Off the playing surface, Walters was voted to serve as the North Atlantic Conference Student Athlete Advisory Committee President. This honor earned him a trip to represent the NAC and Johnson at the NCAA Convention in Indianapolis in 2018.

Austin will graduate with a degree in Business with a concentration in Sport Management.
