Grace Page Nominated for North Atlantic Conference Woman of the Year

WATERVILLE, ME.-The North Atlantic Conference announced the 2019-2020 NAC Woman of the Year Nominees earlier today. Grace Page of women's tennis is one of eight nominees announced by the conference.

NAC WOMAN OF THE YEAR INFORMATION

The NAC Woman of the Year award is modeled after the NCAA Woman of the Year program which honors graduating student athletes who distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletic excellence, service, and leadership. The NAC also selects a Man of the Year using the same model, nominees for which will be released on June 25. These are the two preeminent awards given annually by the conference.

Member schools nominate student athletes from their own institution, then conference Athletic Directors and Senior Woman Administrators vote to select the Woman of the Year. Scoring for the academic achievement section is based on the undergraduate cumulative grade-point average of the nominee. Scoring for athletic excellence is based on the nominee's honors and accomplishments including awards and championships, and scoring for service and leadership is based on their involvement in campus and community activities and organizations over the course of their collegiate career. Administrators also consider a short personal statement written by each nominee.

The NAC Woman of the Year will be announced June 30 and will be honored on her campus during the upcoming academic year.

ABOUT GRACE PAGE

Page earned a bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Education, Sociology, and Business from Northern Vermont University-Johnson in May, 2020. Page volunteered at an elementary school in her hometown and also volunteered at the North Country Animal League. She joined classmates on an alternative spring break in 2018 in which they volunteered in Nicaragua teaching English, building classrooms, and running afterschool programs. Her 150 hours of volunteerism also included planting flowers in the town of Johnson and coordinating an effort to send 500 cards to children at Saint Jude Children's Hospital. Page was a member of the 2018 Fall NAC All-Academic Team and served as the co-captain of the Badgers' Women's Tennis team as a senior.

On the court, Page was the NAC Rookie of the Year as a first-year player and earned First Team All-Conference honors in her final two seasons. Page was awarded the highest honor that a student athlete can achieve at Northern Vermont University-Johnson this spring, the Richard E. Andersen Award. This award is given to a senior athlete who has achieved athletic and academic excellence whilst being an exemplar of conduct on and off the playing surface.

"Northern Vermont University-Johnson has provided a wealth of opportunities for me to flourish to become the strong woman I am today," said Page.

"I have actively been a member in the Johnson community by volunteering, and being a scholar athlete. My volunteer work consisted of 150+ hours. I volunteered time cleaning up downtown Johnson by planting flowers and weeding. I fixed up the North Country Animal League and supported children as they played with animals. During Freshman Seminar I spearheaded a campaign to create 500 cards for children at Saint Jude's Hospital, with classmates and children from Molly Stark School, in my hometown. I returned to this elementary school and volunteered during school breaks. Lastly, I joined Badger Alternative Break and traveled to Managua, Nicaragua for a week-long volunteer trip. I taught English to children, helped build a classroom, and ran after-school programs."

"While at Johnson I joined the tennis team I brought positivity, grit, perseverance, and a love for the game each time I stepped on the court, and shared this passion with teammates, as captain. Staying focused on my goal during each match led to my success both on and off the court. Throughout college I worked to assist in paying for my education. I worked at UCS Camp with disadvantaged children, Apple Tree Preschool, and Stowe Mountain Resort. My experiences have guided me to pursue a career helping others. I intend to give back to communities through the essential development of youth".

The NAC Woman of the Year will be announced June 30 and the winner will be honored on her campus during the upcoming academic year.
