Women's Basketball & Women's Track and Field Add Shaydee Gunnell

JOHNSON, Vt.- The Northern Vermont University-Johnson women's basketball program and women's track and field program added a multi-sport commitment for the 2021-2022 seasons earlier this week.

Shaydee Gunnell has signed the necessary paperwork and has made her commitment to NVU-Johnson. Gunnell will arrive to campus in the fall of 2021 and plans to pursue a degree in Pre-Professional Health Studies.

Gunnell comes to NVU-Johnson from Portland, Oregon where she is a student-athlete at Cleveland High School. "I chose NVU-Johnson because of the opportunity to compete both on the women's basketball program and women's track and field program. Throughout the recruitment process I felt like my transition would be easy and there is a strong sense of community feeling where you can build strong relationships early."

During her time at Cleveland High School, Gunnell earned her varsity letter in basketball since her freshman year and was named the team captain as a sophomore. As a track and field athlete Grunnell earned fourth place metal in PIL varsity districts for javelin, while also earning the state award for contribution to the 4x4 relay at the state track meet.

"From the first time Shaydee and I spoke on the phone I could tell how positive and upbeat of a person she is," said Head Women's Basketball Coach Greg Eckman. "She has incredible energy on the floor, plays with passion and has a great basketball IQ.  Shaydee is a fundamentally & physically strong guard who can get to the rim in the half court and in transition. In addition to her ball handing and driving ability, Shaydee is an excellent shooter from behind the arc.  On the defensive side of the ball she is a great on ball defender and has a skill for getting her hands in the passing lane. During the recruitment process I have enjoyed our many conversations about the game of basketball, game strategy and her interests outside of the game of basketball."

Gunnell is excited for the next steps in her academic and athletic career and knows NVU-Johnson will provide her with the support system to be successful. "I'm super excited to have the opportunity to be coached by both Coach Eckman and Coach Woods. I appreciate how both of them have a main focus for the overall well-being of their student-athletes and provide support to succeed academically and athletically. The Badger family has shown that NVU-Johnson can be a home away from home and all athletes and staff have been encouraging throughout the process."

Both Head Coaches Greg Eckman and Shawn Woods plan to announce additional commitments for the 2021-2022 year in the near future.
