Mecklenburg's Shutout, Day's No Hitter Lift Lynx Over Badgers

GAME OVERVIEW:

REVERE, MA. – The Lesley Lynx Softball team got back to .500 on Saturday afternoon, shutting out the Northern Vermont-Johnson Badgers across both games of a doubleheader. They won the first game 8-0 in five innings and the second game 12-0 in five. The Lynx advance to 4-4 overall this season, while the Badgers fall to 1-10.

INSIDE GAME 1:

  • The Lynx got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first, on the back of Jordan Day's 200th career hit. Day sent a two-run home run over the right field fence to give her team the lead and collect the milestone, three years to the day that she picked up her 100th career hit as a sophomore.
  • Antonia Kieran added to the scoring the third inning, singling to drivein Day and send Ilana Zack to third. Zack would then score while Kieran drew a throw down to second base, with both runners ending up safe. Lindsey Jensen would send Kieran home later in the inning and Mahlia Medina followed that up with another hit to score Sam Jensen and make the score 6-0.
  • Holly Swinamer picked up her first collegiate RBI in the bottom of the fourth, reaching on an error that allowed Ilana Zack to score.
  • Day finished the first game as she began it, with a ball crushed to the fence. It did not go over this time, but it did put the Lynx ahead by enough to end the game as Samantha Mecklenburg came across to score.
  • Mecklenburg finished the game with two hits allowed and a shutout, the first of her collegiate career, to pick up her second win of the season. Mariah Muskin took the loss for the Badgers.

INSIDE GAME 2:

  • The Lynx came out of the gates hot again in game two, this time putting the game away beofre they side was retired in the bottom of the first. Lesley scored ten runs in the bottom of the first and sent fifteen batters to the plate.
  • Medina got the scoring started by drawing a walk and then advancing to second on a wild pitch, taking third while it was uncovered, and scoring as the Badgers' catcher threw the ball to the empty base. Day then drew a walk as well, followed by a double by Zack, and came across to score on a wild pitch.
  • Jess O'Neill picked up her first hit as a Lynx to score Zack and was followed up by consecutive hit batters with the bases loaded to score Kieran and Sam Jensen. Lindsey Jensen then scored on a wild pitch, Mecklenburg was hit by a pitch to reload the bases, and Day collected another RBI on a single to centerfield.
  • Lesley would add two more runs over the next three innings, with Zack driving in Mecklenburg with a base hit in the third and Medina scoring Lindsey Jensen on a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
  • While the bats were doing their thing, Day was doing her's on the mound. She threw her second career no-hitter and her first shutout of the season while striking out six to earn her second win of the year.

The Lynx are back in action tomorrow, Sunday April 3rd, for a doubleheader at home against NVU-Lyndon. First pitch of the first game is at 1:30 PM.
