Badgers Drop Conference Doubleheader Against Rival NVU-Lyndon

JOHNSON, Vt.- Northern Vermont University-Johnson dropped two North Atlantic Conference games to rival Northern Vermont University-Lyndon, losing the opening game 9-7 in eight innings and then falling in the final game of the evening by a score of 11-3.

 

Game One- NVU-Lyndon 9, NVU-Johnson 7 – 8 innings

It was Johnson's Savannah Dufrense who got on base first off, a Hornet walk. A single from Jules Reed and then a shot by Mia Blackwell put the Badgers on the board first as Blackwell drove in Dufrense and Reed. 

It wasn't until the third inning that the Hornets took the lead. Victoria Valentine singled to center with one out, stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error. She came in to tie the score on Gracie Ducker's infield single.  After Robinson singled, Ashley Hart's single to right scored Ducker and advanced Robinson to third.  Robinson then came home on a passed ball to make the score 4-2, Lyndon. 

Johnson bounced back in the bottom half of the inning and took the lead after two consecutive singles from Dufrense and Nicole Mooney before Reed hit a deep shot that resulted in a two RBI triple. 

It wasn't until the seventh inning when the Hornets took another lead but it didn't last as Mooney reached on a single in the bottom half of the inning, followed by a shot to deep center that was a two run inside the park homerun for Annika Dyhrberg.

 

The Hornets would eventually win in NCAA softball tiebreaker format. Valentine earned the win for the Hornets and Nicole Mooney and the Badgers moved to 0-1 on the season.

 

Game Two- NVU-Lyndon 11, NVU-Johnson 3

 

The Hornets jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Johnson saw their only lead of the game in the bottom of the second leading 3-2. After Dufresne and Mooney both reached, Dufresne came in to score on the passed ball.

The Hornets then would go on a run earning five hits that resulted in three runs. Valentine kept the Badgers off the scoreboard in the final two innings to close out the win for the Hornets.  She allowed only one earned run while striking out five.  Mooney again took the loss for the Badgers.

With the loss the Badgers move to 0-2 and will host Thomas College on Saturday, April 10.
