Women's Track and Field Gain Alyssa Cervantes for 2022 Campaign

JOHNSON, Vt.-The Northern Vermont University-Johnson women's track and field program and Head Coach Shawn Woods have tabbed a commitment for the 2022 season!

Alyssa Cervantes has signed the necessary paperwork and has made her commitment to NVU-Johnson where she will arrive on campus in the fall of 2021. A native of El Rito, New Mexico and a student-athlete at Mesa Vista High School, Cervantes plans to pursue a degree in creative writing. 

"I chose NVU-Johnson because the community feeling seems great. It seems like a place that I can fit into and I feel as if I can strive and accomplish the goals I have set forth myself," said Cervantes. 

During her time at Mesa Vista High School, Cervantes earned the Excellence in Student Achievement Award and was nominated for the award through the New Mexico School Boards Association and was named to the honor roll for her academic achievements. 

On the playing surface Cervantes earned Most Improved during her freshman basketball season. Throughout her junior year, she was awarded two metals of honorable mention for the sports of volleyball and basketball. On the track and cross-country course, Cervantes has earned numerous award ribbons.

"Alyssa has an adventuresome travel spirit and is exactly what I'm looking for as I build a geographically diverse and competitive track program," said Woods. "Her sprint speed in the 100,200, and 400 meters will help us in a number of events including the relays.Her creative writing major is a perfect fit at Vermont's premier liberal arts campus."

"I am thrilled to compete for Coach Woods and I cannot wait to gain additional experience when competing for him. I am also very excited to join the Badger family because I get the opportunity to compete at the collegiate level and I'm very eager to get started and meet everyone at NVU-Johnson."

Alyssa Cervantes becomes the second addition for Head Coach Shawn Woods and the women's track and field program for the 2022 season. Coach Woods plans to announce additional commitments in the near future.
