Northern Vermont University-Johnson Alumni Weekend & Athletics Hall of Fame Induction

Johnson, Vt.- The Northern Vermont University-Johnson Alumni Reunion and Family Weekend is underway and will continue until Sunday evening. 

 Athletics Contests

The Northern Vermont University-Johnson men's and women's soccer teams will face off against University of Maine Presque Isle Saturday afternoon. The women's game will be played at 1:00pm and the men's game will follow with a 3:30pm start.

 Sunday the women's volleyball team faces off in a tri-match that will include a 12:00pm match against Bay Path and a 4:00pm match against Paul Smith's College.

 Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

On Saturday evening at 5:30pm in the Stearns Performance Space the athletics department will be honoring the following inductees for the 2018 Northern Vermont University-Johnson Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.

 Individuals: 

  Wade Jean '90 

During his playing career at Johnson, Wade excelled as a multi-sport athlete.  He participated in Men's Soccer, Nordic Skiing and Tennis.  Wade was a 2-time captain of the soccer team, won the Bryan Wendall Award, he and his teams were Mayflower Conference Champions 3-times during his playing career.  His soccer team also earned the Region 5 Western Championship 2-times.  Wade came back to Johnson as an assistant soccer coach in the 1989 season and has continued coaching at the college level where he and his teams have amassed a number honors and awards.  Individually Wade has been honored 4-times as Alantic-10 Coach of the Year, 1-time as NE-10 Coach of the Year, and the NCAA National Tournament Committee 2-times.  Wade has lead his teams to (1) NAIA National Tournament Appearance, (3) Atlantic-10 Regular Season Championships, (5) Atlantic-10 Championship Appearances, (1) MAC Regular Season Championship, (3) MAC Tournament Championships, 3 NCAA Championship Appearances, (3) America East Tournament Appearances, (3) NE-10 Tournament Appearances.   

 Gabe McConkey '06 

Gabe graduated from Johnson in 2006.  As a member of the men cross-country team, Gabe was a decorated runner and a dedicated teammate.  In 2004, he placed 8th at the Castleton Invitational, 6th at the NAC (North Atlantic Conference) championships and 3rd overall at the Johnson State College invitational.  A 19th place finish at the State Championship meet capped off his season.  In 2005, he finished 3rd in the Castleton Invitational, 2nd at the Elms Invitational and he and his team claimed a first place team finish.  Gabe placed 2nd at the Southern Vermont Invitational and a 3rd place finish at the NAC Championship.  During the season, Gabe was the top finisher on the team in all 7 races and at the State Championship finished 10th overall.  In his final season in 2006, he placed 7th at the Castleton Invitational, 3rd at the Elms Invitational and 6th at the NAC Championship.  During his 3-year career, he was a top 5 finisher in 7 out of 17 races, a 3-time NAC First-Team All-Conference and 4-time NAC runner of the week. 

 Team Inductee: 

1977 Men's Cross-Country Team  

 We are honoring our 1977 Men's Cross-Country team with an introduction to the Johnson Athletics Hall of Fame.  During the 1977 season the team achieved a Top 5 finish at the N.A.I.A. (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) District Championship and a earned a trip to Nationals in Kenosha, WI.  During the National event, Team members Steve Novak and Tim Cowan tied for 1st, Elwin Sweeney was 3rd, Mike Mashtare was 4th, Eric Smith was 5th and William Bumbera placed 9th as the team took six of the top 10 positions.  Larry Martell also came back from his injury to compete in Nationals. 

The team also won the N.E.S.C.A.C. (New England Small College Athletic Conference) Title in 1977 season getting revenge on Plymouth who earlier in the season defeated the Badgers squad during a meet by only 1-point.
