Kate Harney comes to Vermont State University Johnson from University of Illinois Springfield where she was an Instructor of Exercise Science. Previous to UIS she held the position of Instructor of Health Science and Assistant Athletic Trainer at Norwich University. She worked with the Men and Women’s Soccer, Men’s Ice Hockey, and Men and Women’s Swimming and Diving programs. She is also the Athletic Trainer for Vermont Green, a USL league 2 team in Burlington, VT.  

Kate received her master’s degree in Physical Education from Adelphi University, where she was also a student-athlete on the Women’s Swimming and Diving team. Kate finished her swimming career at the NE-10 conference championship with a top 8 finish in the 100 free and a top 16 finish in the 50 free. Kate was also a member of three school record holding relay teams. Kate served as an Assistant Coach for the Men and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams her second year of graduate school. Kate graduated with the Gary Barrette Award in PE for outstanding graduate PE student.  

Kate received her undergraduate degree in Athletic Training from Stony Brook University, where she was also a student-athlete on the Women’s Swimming and Diving team. She served as the team’s captain her senior year, and the America East SAAC representative. She also earned a Senior Scholar Student-Athlete award.  

Kate is originally from Flemington, NJ, where she attended Hunterdon Central Regional High School. She was a three-sport athlete (soccer, swimming, and softball), 3x school record holder in two different sports, and was awarded the Bradshaw Coaches Award. While she was in high school, Kate tore her ACL, which was her first taste of Sports Medicine and guided her career choice.  

Kate loves living in the Green Mountains and takes full advantage of the amazing skiing and golfing around her, even though a significant amount of her salary goes to buying more golf balls.
