Johnson sees visiting Green Mountain rally for 73-68 win

JOHNSON, Vt. – Host Johnson State College saw visiting Green Mountain College make up a 19-point first-half deficit and roar back for a 73-68 North Atlantic Conference men's basketball victory on Saturday at Carter Gymnasium.  The Eagles improve to 3-12, 2-7 NAC while Johnson dips to 6-10, 4-6 NAC.

The Badgers were led by freshman guard Asim Khan (Torrance, Calif./Torrance) who scored 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting while adding four rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals.  Junior guard Josh Reed (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) (pictured) drilled 5-of-7 3-point field goals en route to 17-point effort.  Senior forward Cody Camisa (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) was also in double-figures scoring 10 points.

GMC was paced by sophomore guard Carnelius Green (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo) who recorded game-high's of 24 points and 14 rebounds.  Sophomore forward Terry Jones (Pearl, Miss./Richland) and sophomore guard Chris Strong (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights) each added 11 points for the Eagles.

Johnson methodically built a double-digit lead with 4:58 remaining the first half after junior Bryan Hickey (Barre, Vt./Spaulding) made a pair of free throws making the score 27-17.  The Badgers would continue to put distance between them and the visitors over the next several minutes behind the marksmanship of Reed.  His third 3-pointer of the half gave Johnson their biggest lead of the game at 40-21 but a 3-pointer by GMC's Green just before the half gave the visitors a bit of momentum and made the score 40-24 at the break.

The Eagles quickly established offensive rhythm in the second half and cut the Badgers' lead to 10 with 16:36 at 46-36.  They continued to chip away at the lead and caught the Badgers at 10:55 to go in the game courtesy of a lay up by sophomore Elijah Wiggins (Pawtucket, R.I./Tolman) making the count 50-50.  GMC would take the lead for good with 3:41 remaining when Green found freshman Cardell Speights (Monroe, N.Y./Washingtonville) for a lay in.

The Badgers were crisp on both ends in the first half shooting 50% from the field (16-32) while holding holding GMC to 38% shooting to earn a 40-24 lead going into the locker room.  The second half was a different story with the Eagles grabbing momentum and holding Johnson to 30% shooting and outscoring the hosts 49-28.

Johnson will move on to play at New England College on Thursday in their next contest with the tip scheduled for 5:30 pm.  Green Mountain will travel to play at Castleton State College on Tuesday night at 7:30 pm in their next contest.
