Lyons Down Badgers 73-50

The Wheaton College men's basketball team picked up a 73-50 victory over Johnson State College in the consolation game of the Keene State College Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday afternoon inside Spaulding Gymnasium.

Wheaton junior guard Billy Battaglia, who was named to the All-Tournament team at the conclusion of the game, led the offense with a career-high 34 points on 13-of-23 shooting from the field, and also added seven boards and two steals. Senior co-captain Eddie Capstick pulled down a game high 12 rebounds and chipped in with 10 points, while classmate and fellow co-captain Mike Cannon also registered 10 points and grabbed six rebounds of his own.

Johnson State College was paced by All-Tournament team selection Rob Hazard who registered 20 points on 7-of-20 shooting, five boards and four steals. First-year forward/guard Demetrius Slade netted 13 points, pulled down six rebounds and blocked three shots for the Badgers.

Wheaton held a lead as large as seven points (11-4) during the first frame where Battaglia led the Blue and White with his 14 first half points to help maintain a 34-31 lead into the break. The Lyons opened the second stanza with an 11-0 run, which featured a pair of layups from Cannon, to take a 45-31 lead.

With ten minutes remaining in the game, the Blue and White went on a 19-9 spurt over the next 8:15 to widen the margin to 71-49 (22 points) with three 3-pointers from Capstick, Cannon and first-year Liam Bruno. The Lyons outscored Johnson State College, 39-19, in the second half to close out the Lyons' first victory of the 2014-15 season.

The Lyons shot 40.3-percent (27-for-67) from the floor, 27.3-percent (9-for-33) from three-point range, and 83.3-percent (10-for-12) from the charity stripe. Wheaton also pulled down a season-high 50 boards in the victory. The last time the Blue and White hauled in 50 or more rebounds occurred in a 72-67 win versus Thomas College on December 10, 2010.

Wheaton held a slim 26-24 differential in points in the paint, while Johnson State fashioned a 23-6 margin in bench points.

Wheaton (1-1) travels to Salve Regina University for a non-conference match-up on Thursday with tip-off slated for 7 p.m. Johnston State (0-2) heads to Williams College for a non-conference contest on Thursday evening at 7 p.m.
