Jeffs Down Badgers

The second-ranked Amherst College men's basketball team cruised to a 108-60 victory over Johnson State in the first game of the 14th annual Ken Wright '52 Invitational Tournament.

With the win, Amherst improves to 2-0 on the year while dropping the Badgers to 0-4.

Five Jeffs scored double-figures as first-year guard Michael Riopel led the way with a game-high 17. Jacob Nabatoff '17, Connor Green '16, David George '17 and Jeff Racy '17 scored 15, 14, 13 and 12, respectively. Riopel was lights out, going 6-for-7 from the field and 3-for-4 from downtown. He also added five rebounds. George led the team in boards with eight, and Jayde Dawson '18 dished out a game-high seven assists.

Johnson State was led by Robert Hazard and Asim Khan. Hazard scored 14 points and was 2-for-5 from behind-the-arc and Khan finished with 13 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the charity stripe. Cory Chase pulled in a team-high five boards, and was the only member of the squad to record more than one rebound.

The Purple & White set the tone early, as Green hit his first of four three-pointers in the first seven seconds of play. The game went back-and-forth in the opening minutes until a 13-0 run in less than three minutes of action pulled them ahead, 22-9.

Riopel increased the Jeffs lead to 19, their largest of the half, when he hit one from downtown at the 5:14 mark. Amherst maintained a double-digit lead and entered the break ahead, 51-36, on 57% (17-for-30) shooting and 53% (8-for-15) from three.

The home team shot the ball even better in the second half. Much like the opening minutes of the game, Amherst hit a three-pointer just six seconds into the period as Johnny McCarthy '18 hit one from deep.

The Jeffs shot an incredible 80% from the floor in the final 20 minutes of regulation, hitting 20-of-25 shots. They were also 7-of-10 (70%) from downtown and 10-of-13 (76.9%) from the charity stripe as they cruised to the 48-point win. Amherst also held a decisive 42-18 advantage in rebounds and 29-12 lead in assists.

Amherst returns to the court tomorrow, Nov. 22 and will play in the championship game against Mount Ida College at 3 p.m. The Hawks overcame an early deficit in the second game of the tournament Friday night to edge Hunter College, 70-68.
