Johnson Captures 62-56 Conference Win Over Mariners

JOHNSON, Vt.-The Northern Vermont University-Johnson men's basketball program edged the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners in /Carter Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. The Badgers earned the win by a score of 62-56.

Ayodeji Shokeye led the Badgers with 14 points, seven rebounds, two steals and an assist, while Robert Dubose added 10 points, six steals, three rebounds and two assists. Tyhee Taylor added nine points, three assists and two steals, while Kiyle Mack recorded eight points on 3-5 shooting and Floyd Davis had five points and a game high eight rebounds.

Both teams traded baskets in the early minutes of regulation, but the Badgers began to build a lead that carried them into the half leading 28-16.

The Mariners went on a seven-point run to open up the second half and cut the Badgers' lead to five, 28-23, with 16:56 to play but NVU-Johnson took an 18-point lead with 6:25 remaining fueled by strong offense performances from Mack, Shokeye, and Dubose which allowed the Badgers to hold on for the win.

The Mariners shot 42.6 percent from the floor and 25.0 percent from three-point land, while the Badgers shot 44.6 percent overall and 20.8 percent from beyond the arc. NVU-Johnson owned the rebounding battle holding a 36-21 advantage.

With the win, men's basketball improves to 6-16 overall and 4-6 in conference action. The Badgers will head to UMPI this upcoming Friday, February 14 for back to back NAC games against the Owls.
