Men's Basketball Caps Weekend Play with Win over SUNY Delhi

DELHI, NY – Team effort leads the VTSU Johnson Badgers to a 58-57 win at SUNY Delhi on Saturday. The Johnson men's basketball team had three players score in double figures and three record 10+ rebounds. Johnson recorded its third NAC victory in the process. "The team defense was outstanding. Our rebounding on both ends allowed us stops and second chances. Raymond Baka, game after game, is proving to be worthy of All-Conference consideration," said Coach Alfred Johnson.

Play remained evenly matched as the two teams traded the lead for the first 10 minutes of the game, remaining tied at 14 apiece with 10:16 on the clock. The Delhi Broncos would push the pace from there, building the largest lead in the game with a 14-6 run that put them up 28-20. No to be outdone though, as the Badgers responded with a 10-2 burst of their own, led by a trio of buckets at the rim by junior Raymond Baka and a perfect four-for-four from the line by sophomore Mohammed Semega. The two teams would then enter halftime tied at 30-30.

The Broncos opened the second half with a pair of layups to extend their lead to 34-30, but the half would remain tight for the duration. Johnson was led by guard Maleek View and Baka, as they combined for 20 points following the halftime. With 37 seconds remaining on the clock, Baka broke the tie with a layup, bringing the score to 56-54. This would be the last time the lead would change, as a missed layup by SUNY Delhi and made layup by View with seconds remaining would seal the game. A last-second three-pointer by Delhi would bring them within one, but still not enough to erase the deficit, leaving the Johnson Badgers with the victory.

Johnson bounced back from a Friday night loss against SUNY Cobleskill, 87-77. The Badgers were then led by View (21 pts, 10 rbs) and Semega (12 pts, 14 rbs) both posting double doubles alongside Baka's 19 points. A strong effort that carried into the following day.

Notes: Semega led the game with 14 rebounds (season high), Baka tied game high points with 22.

Men's Basketball is back in action on Friday, February 2 as the Badgers host SUNY Poly. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 pm.
