Husson Holds a Dozen After 18 at NAC Championships

Husson University fought through a steady ocean breeze at Samoset Resort to post a 297 in the first of two rounds at the 2013 North Atlantic Conference Golf Championships. The Eagles Lance Bernier (Lincoln, Maine)is tied with Castleton State'sCameron Daley (Duxbury, Mass.) atop of the individual standings in the 35-golfer field, each having shot 72 on the par 70, 6,108-yard course.

Husson, defending seven-straight NAC Championships, owns a 12-stroke lead on Salem State University, which shot 309 on Saturday. Maine Maritime is third at 321, followed by Castleton at 325 and Maine-Farmington at 329. Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts is in sixth place at 348. Johnson State College rounds out the seven-team field at 389.

Bernier shot par on 13 holes and birdied holes two and 14 en route to his 72. Husson had four players post par on 10 or more holes and got three birdies from Porter Gervais (New Limerick, Maine)and Bill Hutchins (Hampden, Maine). Hutchins sits in third place with a 73 on Saturday. Gervais' 75 was good enough for sixth place through 18 holes. Greg Pike (Pomfret, Conn.)sits seventh, putting the birds' scoring four in the top ten.
Daley birdied the par-five fourth as well as the 14thfor Salem State. He shot par on a dozen holes, finishing two strokes over par. Daley was one of three Vikings in the top ten, with their fourth scoring golfer in a five-way tie for 11th. Kevin Dyer (Beverly, Mass.)shot a tied-for-field best four birdies to card a 78 for eighth place. Craig Farley (Bradford, Mass.)is a stroke and place behind at 79, while Tom Grant (Mansfield, Mass.)is knotted with three Maine Maritime golfers for 11that 80.

 

The Mariners' Keenan Kalthoff (Fallbrook, Calif.), Dan MacKenzie (Millinocket, Maine)and Nathan Roop (Gorham, Maine)each signed off on an 80. Kalthoff narrowly missed an ace when his tee shot went in and out of the cup on the 11th, breaking the plastic on the bottom. He parred nine holes on the day, while Roop shot par on 10. MacKenzie carded seven pars and a birdie. The Mariners' five-man, Kevin Pepin (Candia, N.H.)posted an 81 to round out Maine Maritime's scoring.

 

With 10 pars and a pair of birdies, Zac Temple (Hartland, Vt.)paced Castleton with a 74, tying for fourth place through the first round. Dan Hogan (Burlington, Vt.)marked down a par on nine holes and took birdies on two more for a Saturday 79, tying with Salem State's Farley for ninth place.

 

After a tough start on the opening hole, Farmington's Joe Messerman (Brunswick, Maine)rebounded with eight pars, including one on each of the Samoset's three par fives, and a pair of birdies for an 80, leaving him in the five-way logjam at 11th. David Berthiaume (Allenstown, N.H.)shot 81 to tie for 16th, while teammate Simon Rollins (South China, Maine)carded an 82 for 19th. Rollins shot four birdies Saturday afternoon. Aaron Rivard (Acton, Maine)rounded out the Beavers' scoring with an 86 for 25thplace.

MCLA's Cam Boraski (Dalton, Mass.)highlighted the Trailblazers afternoon with the day's only eagle. Boraski, who shot par or better on each of the first seven holes, needed three shots to traverse the par-five, 503-ayrd fourth. He birdied the second and tenth and marked a par on eight holes Saturday to finish his round with a 74, which leaves him in a tie for fourth place heading into Sunday. Taylor Dunn (Williamstown, Mass.)shot 81 to tie for 16th, while Padraig Dougherty (Pittsfield, Mass.)carded an 85 to tie for 23rd.

 

Johnson State got an 87 from Josh Reed (Sycamore, Ill.)to lead the Badgers effort at the tournament. He enters Sunday's round tied for 26thplace.
