Cobleskill Runs Past Johnson 14-4

JOHNSON, Vt. (May 1, 2011) -  Johnson State College scored just six seconds into the contest but visiting SUNY Cobleskill would control action the rest of the way as the Fighting Tigers picked up a 14-4 non-conference men's lacrosse victory on Sunday at Minaert Field.  With the win Cobleskill moves to 7-8 overall while Johnson dips to 1-9 overall.

JSC's Jason Dubie (South Burlington, Vt.) took the opening face up, dumped a pass to Alex Petti (East Greenwich, R.I.), and Petti rifled a shot to the top right of the goal for a quick 1-0 Badger lead.

Cobleskill would answer with the next two scores, one from Jeff Fichtner (Rochester, N.Y.) and one from Kevin Whitcomb (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), to take their first lead of the contest but Justin Connolly (Jeffersonville, Vt.) would knot the score at 2-2 with 8:29 left in the first with his only goal of the game.

A Peter Gonzalez (West Islip, N.Y.) goal and another from Whitcomb gave the Fighting Tigers a 4-2 advantage after one period, a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the afternoon.

Three more Gonzalez tallies along with a goal from Steve Hughes (Wallkill, N.Y.) and Brian Murphy (Cross River, N.Y.) would thrust Cobleskill into a 9-2 lead as the teams headed into halftime and Tigers would cruise to the victory.

Gonzalez would finish with four goals and four assists on the day to key the Cobleskill offense while Fichtner and Murphy would add two scores apiece with Fichtner adding an assist.

Johnson would get a trio of goals from Petti while Justin Nelson (Lakeville, Mass.) would account for an assist.

Tom Kzenick (Columbus, N.Y.) would stop nine shots to pick up the win in goal for Cobleskill while his Johnson counterpart Branden Sawyer (East Greenwich, R.I.) had a much busier day making 18 saves.  Cobleskill would record a decisive 52-23 shot advantage while picking up 55 groundballs to Johnson's 34.

Johnson will wrap up their season on Wednesday, April 4 in a make-up game at Norwich University at 4:00 pm while Cobleskill square off at Keuka College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Semifinal also on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
