Husson Takes Pair From Johnson

JOHNSON, Vt. – Johnson State softball saw visiting Husson University take both ends of a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader on Sunday with a game one score of 9-0 (6 innings) and game two ending 18-4 (5 innings).  Johnson now stands at 9-18-1, 3-6-1 NAC while Husson improves to 21-8, 9-1 NAC.

Game One: Husson 9, Johnson 0 (6 Innings)

In the opener Husson's Kody Lyon (Dalton, N.H./White Mountains) allowed only three hits, all singles, over six innings pitched while striking out eight and not surrendering a walk and the Johnson defense had a down-right rough game committing nine errors leading to eight unearned runs for Husson.

Johnson's Maria Gleason (Enosburg Falls, Vt./Enosburg) went 2-for-3 while Emily Himberg (Williston, Vt./Champlain Valley) (pictured) went 1-for-2 to account for the team's three hits on the day.  Starting pitcher Meagan Russ (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) surely did not receive great aid from her defense as she pitched all six innings allowing eight hits, one earned run, and two walks while striking out two.

Lona Sargent (Sullivan, Maine/Sumner Memorial) went 2-for-3 with three runs scored for HU while Courtney Hill (Calais, Maine/Calais) had a 2-for-4 day with two runs to key the Eagle offense.

The Badgers kept the Eagles within sight trailing 2-0 after four innings but four errors in the top of the fourth for Johnson allowed four runs to score and then they added three more in the sixth to pull away.

Game Two:  Husson 18, Johnson 4 (5 Innings)

In game two Husson exploded for nine first-inning runs to help them cruise to an 18-4 (5 Innings) win.  Brianna Webster (Belfast, Maine/Belfast) drove in three runs, doubled, and scored once while Deb Colpitts (Levant, Maine/Hermon) went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs for the Eagles.  Becca McCarty (Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan) picked up the win for Husson allowing just one hit in three innings pitched and striking out three.

Johnson's Kristy McDonnell (Quechee, Vt./Hartford) was touched for 12 hits and nine earned runs in four innings while walking five and striking out one to get the loss. Gleason supplied a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning following an RBI single for Amber McCullock (Morrisville, Vt./Peoples) to put JSC in the scoring column in the second game.    Russ and McDonnell both also went 1-for-2 with a run for the Badgers.

Johnson will be host New England College in a set of games on Tuesday starting at 4:00 pm while Husson moves on to face the University of Maine-Orono at in a single-game at 4:00 pm on Tuesday.
