Badgers Surrender Two NAC Contests to Eagles

Bangor, ME - Husson softball earned two North Atlantic Conference (NAC) wins against Johnson State Saturday afternoon after an 8-0 win followed by a 10-0 victory. The Badgers stand at 6-12 on the season at 3-7 in the NAC while the Eagles advance to 17-8-1 and 10-0 in the NAC.

In game one, Husson put three runs on the board in the bottom of the third inning while sending one home in the fourth and seeing four more runners round the plates to blank the visitors 8-0 in six innings.  Senior Courtney Hill (Calais, ME / Calais) went 3-for-3 earning two runs and knocking in one RBI while shortstop Aimee Mortensen (Biddeford, ME / Biddeford) went 3-for-4 contributing two runs and two RBIs towards the Eagles' winning effort.  

The first three innings of game one were scoreless until Kayla Merrill (Bethel, ME / Telstar Regional) send a triple down the right field line setting Merrill up for an RBI off her single. After Victoria Overlock (Belfast, ME / Belfast Area) grounded out at first Mortensen advanced to third sending Hill home. The next play sent Mortensen home bringing the inning's tally to 3-0, Husson's advantage.  

Mortensen sent Hill home again in the bottom of the fourth but both teams fell quiet until the bottom of the sixth and final inning when Merrill reached second after two Johnson errors setting the Eagles up for four more runs.  Johnson's Andrea Williams (Thornburn, Nova Scotia/North Nova) registered the lone hit for the Badgers.

Eagles pitcher Becca McCarty (Skowhegan, ME) got the win pitching a complete six innings and giving up only one hit. Badgers pitcher Williams gave up 10 hits in the loss.

During game two, Husson put one run on the board in the first inning while sending the remaining nine runners home in the third to blank the visitors again for a final score of 10-0 in five innings.  Senior Courtney Hill (Calais, ME / Calais) went 2-for-2 and earned two runs and while freshman Breanna Martin (Oxford, ME / Oxford Hills Comprehensive) went 2-for-3 contributing two runs and two RBIs towards the Eagles' winning effort.   

Husson started off game two with a single from Martin, which sent Hill home brining the score to 1-0 where it would remain until the third inning. Husson jumped out to a large lead after a series of plays, the highlight of which was when Chelsea Brennan (Woonsocket, RI / Lincoln) hit a grand slam sending Lona Sargent (Sullivan, ME / Sumner Memorial), Melissa Souza (East Bridgewater, MA / East Bridgewater) and Heidi Shaw (Manchester, ME / Maranacook) home for a final tally of 9-0, Husson's advantage.

Amanda Ryan (Brewer, ME) pitched three innings for the win, allowing just one earned run. Meghan Russ (Burlington, Vt. / Burlington) was saddled with the loss.

The Badgers will travel to New England College Tuesday the 16th for a 3:00 contest while The Eagles will visit Colby College for another doubleheader starting at 4:00pm.
