Badgers Sweep Maine Maritime on the Road

Maine Maritime dropped a pair of North Atlantic Conference games to Johnson State in a softball double-header Saturday. The Badgers won the first game 5-4 in eight innings and took the nightcap 4-3. Johnson State improved to 4-10 overall, 4-0 NAC, while the Mariners fell to 2-10, 0-6.

GAME 1

Kristy McDonnell scored from third on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the game for Johnson State. McConnell started the inning on second because on the international tie breaker rule and moved on an Andrea Williams grounder to third.

The Badgers took a three-run in the second inning on a Williams double to center field that scored McConnell. Williams later scored an error and Anna Bingham singled to score Shannon Grier

The Mariners evened the game in the top of the third when Hayley Rae's ground-rule double plated Andi Flannery. Cindy Schultz scored on an Abby Yeo single and Rae crossed home on a passed ball.

Maine Maritime took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth when Flannery scored on an error before the Badgers evened the game in the bottom of the frame on McDonnell's sacrifice hit scored Sarah Voorhis.

Schultz and Rae finished with two hits for the Mariners and Alex Bean, Bigham and Williams each had a pair of hits for the Badgers.

Yeo took the loss in 3.1 innings, giving up two runs (one earned). Erica Taylor started the game for the Mariners and surrendered three runs (two earned). Williams earned the win with seven strikeouts and two earned runs.

GAME 2

The Mariners struck first in the first inning with two runs on a Rae home run to center field. Johnson tacked on three in the third when an error at third scored two runs and Alex Macey's RBI double to scored Taylor.

McClean's  double in the fourth plated scored Moore. Maine Maritime added a late score in the seventh Hilton, who singled, scored on a double steal.

Yeo took the loss in in five innings of work despited surrendering just one earned run. Williams earned the save in 3.2 innings with five strikeouts. Macey picked up the save with 3.1 innings of relief.
