Women’s Basketball Lose Road Game to Cardinals

PLATTSBURGH, NY — The Northern Vermont University-Johnson women's basketball team traveled to SUNY Plattsburgh on Saturday afternoon for a non-conference matchup. The Cardinals took a 82-46 win over the Badgers. 

NVU-Johnson falls to 0-9 in the loss while SUNY Plattsburgh improves to 4-4 overall. 

Klaire Ware earned her first career double-double, scoring 17 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Ware went an impressive 8-10 from the field and added three steals. Ellery Kiefer added 10 points and five rebounds for the Badgers.

The Cardinals took an early 9-0 lead before a 3-point shot by Lindsey LaPerle put the Badgers on the board. The teams traded buckets throughout the first quarter, but the Cardinals outscored the Badgers 22-12 in the first quarter to take the advantage. Turnovers plagued NVU-Johnson in the second quarter as the Cardinals forced them to turn the ball over 11 times, allowing Plattsburgh to take a 20-point advantage at halftime.

Halie Tillotson opened the second half with a made jump shot to give Johnson a spark. Back-to-back field goals by Ware closed the gap to 15 early in the quarter before the Cardinals went on a 12-2 run to extend their lead. The Badgers led a well-balanced attack and found their rhythm offensively in the third stanza, but were outscored by the Cardinals 22-19. SUNY Plattsburgh controlled the fourth quarter, holding the Badgers to nine points i to seal the 82-46 victory.

Women's basketball will return to action on Sunday, January 5th at Carter Gymnasium as they host St. Joseph for a non-conference match. The game is slated to begin at 1:00pm.
