Women's Basketball Edged by NVU-Lyndon 68-58

LYNDONVILLE, Vt.-The Northern Vermont University-Johnson women's basketball team traveled to NVU-Lyndon on Saturday afternoon to compete in a President's Cup Challenge contest. The Hornets edged the Badgers late to earn the conference win by a score of 68-58.

Ellery Kiefer earned a double-double and led the Badgers on both ends of the floor scoring 11 points and pulling down a game high 13 rebounds. Freshman Kiana Johnson scored 13 points, eight rebounds and two assists while Lindsey LaPerle added 12 points on 4-9 shooting. 

LaPerle energized the Badgers offensively in the first period scoring eight points on 3-5 shooting. The Hornets started the game on a 10-0 run until LaPerle and Klaire Ware brought the score within two. The Hornets would head into the second period leading 16-14. 

Amorette Rodriquez opened up the second quarter with a field goal from behind the arc to take the one-point lead early in the quarter. The two teams traded baskets throughout the quarter, but it was the NVU-Lyndon who took the lead by three headed into the break.

The Hornets went on a run in the third period, but the Badgers Johnson shot an impressive 3-4 from the floor in the period to keep the Badgers within nine points. A strong push in the final quarter wasn't enough and the Hornets closed the game with the 68-58 win. 

NVU-Johnson won the assist battle 46-38 but turnovers were the difference as the Hornets turned the Badgers over 24 times.

With the loss the Badgers fall to 0-16 and 0-7 in the NAC. Women's basketball will host Norwich University tomoorw at 2:00pm followed by SUNY Canton on Friday, January 31.
