Badgers Battle Early but Plymouth State Pulls Away in Second Half

After a strong start, the Badgers fell 73-52 to Plymouth State on Wednesday night, with strong individual performances in the season opener.

The Badgers kicked off their season opener with energy as Jaylah Jones scored a layup off a steal and buried a three-pointer to give the Badgers an early 5-2 lead. Kristie Zator added two buckets, including a deep three, to push Johnson ahead 13-7 midway through the first quarter. Plymouth responded late, tying the game at 17-17 to close the opening quarter.

Jones put Johnson back in front 19-17 with a layup, to start the following quarter, but Plymouth answered with a 5-0 run to regain the lead. Zator kept the Badgers close with two big threes, trimming the deficit to 30-27 at 2:41, but turnovers allowed Plymouth to close the half ahead 33-27.

The third quarter proved decisive as Plymouth opened with back-to-back threes and a 13-1 run to stretch the lead to 46-28. Johnson fought back with free throws from Jacquelyn Oberg and a jumper from Abbie Hernandez but trailed 54-39 entering the fourth. Zator drilled her fourth three-pointer and Kamryn Devero added a late triple, but Plymouth's ultimately too the win in 73-52.
