JOHNSON, Vt. (September 1, 2010) - Johnson State opened their season on Wednesday with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of visiting Gordon College in non-conference women's soccer action at Minaert Field. Sophomore Karina Scavo (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) tallied a pair of goals in a span of 1:57 during the first half to lift the Saints to the victory to move to 1-0, 0-0 The Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Badgers fall to 0-1, 0-0 in the North Atlantic Conference.
Gordon controlled action early and capitalized when senior Kelly Donlan (Burlington, Conn.) centered a ball to Scavo who then beat Johnson goalkeeper Amber McCullock (Morrisville, Vt.) to the lower right corner at the 17:52 mark of the first half to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Just moments later Scavo took at lead pass from senior Kaelyn McBride (Franklin, Mass.) and blasted a dazzling shot to the lower left corner this time for a 2-0 Gordon lead at 19:49.
After being outshot 12-1 in the first half momentum would begin to turn slightly as a gritty Johnson side began to control possession more and generate scoring opportunities. The Badgers would break through at 74:45 when freshman Kyleigh Joseph (Hancock, N.H.) dribbled down the right side of the defense and deposited a goal past GC keeper Abbey McManus (Bel Air, Md.) to make the score 2-1 and complete the scoring on the day.
McCullock would make four saves for Johnson in the loss with Jes Gertsch (East Haven, Conn.) coming on for a shift and making a pair of stops. Gordon starter Kari Christenson (Standish, Maine) made one save for the Saints while McManus did not record a stop.
The Badgers will next host Norwich University on Wednesday, September 8 at 4:00 pm while Gordon will play their first home match in the next contest on Saturday, September 4 at 12:00 pm when they host the University of Southern Maine.
