Badgers Fall to Mariners 2-0

Emily Wyman tallied two goals to lead the Mariners to a 2-0 win over Johnson State on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, the Mariners improve to 4-5-1 overall and 2-2-1 in NAC play while Johnson slides to 3-7 on the year and 2-3 in the conference.

After dominating control for most of the start of the game, the Mariners finally had a scoring chance with a little over 26 minutes remaining in the first half, when Makayla Lewis struck a booming shot that tested Badger keeper Nichole Weeks. The ball bounced off Weeks' hands before she was able to control the ball, keeping the game scoreless.

With 18 minutes left in the first half, Susana DeFrank logged the next opportunity for the Mariners when she beat Weeks to the ball in front of the next, but her shot was just inches wide right of the net.

The Mariners finally got on the scoreboard in the 34th minute after peppering the Johnson State net. Lewis snuck a shot by her defender up to Wyman who sniped the ball into the net to give the Mariners the 1-0 lead.

With time expiring in the first half, the Mariners drew a scoring opportunity following a Badger yellow card with 1:05 remaining. DeFrank's hard kick was blocked by a Johnson State defender, keeping the Mariner lead at 1-0 entering the intermission.

In the second half, the Mariners picked up right where they left off, taking 13 shots. Wyman added an insurance goal in the 89th minute on a pass from Morgan Libby to lift the Mariners over the Badgers.

Maggie McConkey was sharp in net for the Mariners stopping all three shots she faced, grabbing her second-straight shutout, while Weeks stopped 10 shots in net. Nichole Weeks made 10 saves between the posts in the losing effort.

Johnson will return to action on Wednesday when it travels to Mitchell College for a 1:00pm game.
