Badgers Win 3-2 in OT Against Mitchell

Johnson State College (4-7, 2-3 NAC) didn't need much extra time to hand Mitchell College a 3-2 loss in overtime on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference women's soccer tilt at Alumni Field.

A free kick taken by Shannon Grier just 31 seconds into the overtime stanza was enough to propel the Badgers to victory. Grier placed a 35-yard strike on frame for the game-winning goal and her first tally of the season.

Johnson State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 25th minute on a finish from Mikaela Rutter, whose strike crossed the goal line just under the crossbar. Mitchell answered in the 38th minute when sophomore midfielder Vannessa Ortiz notched her third goal on the season. She settled a ball at the top of the 18-yard box and finished her shot far post to even the game at 1-1.

Three minutes later, freshman Drew Johndrow found the back of the net to give the Mariners a one-goal advantage headed into the break. She collected a through ball from teammate Taylor Saja on the box and netted a strike far post for her first collegiate score.

The Badgers tallied their equalizer in the 67th minute on a finish from Jenna Paul . Paul was on the back end of a give-and-go with teammate Kylie Aither that resulted in a finish to the left side of the goal.

The game was decided in the early seconds of overtime when Johnson State was awarded a free kick on a Mitchell foul 35 yards out from goal. Grier took the restart and notched the game winner on a top-shelf strike.

Nichole Weeks notched 4 saves in net for the Badgers in her third win on the season. Senior goalkeeper Katie McBride finished with 4 saves for Mitchell.

Mitchell (1-5-2 overall) will next play at Elms College on Saturday, October 10 at 2:30 p.m. Johnson State (4-7-0 overall) returns to action at home against New England College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
