Badgers End Season in Close 3-2 Loss to Roos

Aliza Armstrong scored her third and fourth goals of the season and Katie Lamica added the game-winner as the SUNY Canton women's soccer team earned a 3-2 victory against Johnson State College on Monday evening.

The Roos (7-7-2) got on the board first in the 7th minute. A Johnson State defender was looking to clear the ball and it deflected off of Taylor Saltus right to the foot of Armstrong in front of net who buried her third goal of the season. SUNY Canton took a 1-0 lead into intermission.

The Badgers (5-12-0) evened the score in the 53rd minute when Kylie Aither fired a laser from 25 yards out just over the outreached hands of Roo keeper Kelsi Gilbert into the upper left corner.

Just more than three minutes later SUNY Canton regained the lead on Armstrong's second tally of the game. Saltus made a move just on the Roos side of midfield and was taken out but the referee played advantage as Kristina DiNardo picked up the loose ball and tore down the right sideline. She passed the ball across the face of goal to Armstrong who finished into the right side of the net.

SUNY Canton added a crucial insurance goal in the 62nd minute when Katie Lamica ripped a shot that went off the post and in to give the hosts a 3-1 lead. Five minutes later Johnson State trimmed the deficit to one when Aither set up a Shannon Grier score.

The Badgers were whistled for a foul and yellow card in the box with 15:30 remaining. Lamica stepped up to take the penalty kick but Johnson State keeper Nichole Weeks made a great diving save to her right to keep the Badgers within one. The visitors pushed for the equalizer late but the Roos held on for the 3-2 victory to improve to .500.

Gilbert made 11 saves in net for the Roos, while Weeks turned aside seven shots for the Badgers.
