Badgers Women's Soccer wins season opener 2-1 verse Vermont Tech

Johnson, VT

9/7/21

The Northern Vermont University-Johnson Badgers Women's Soccer team opened their season verses Vermont Technical College Wednesday Sept 7, 2021 in Randolph, VT.  The VTC Knights (0-2-1) entered today match-up with two games already played this season.  Both teams started the contest off exchanging shot attempts throughout the opening 45 minutes.  NVU-Johnson Goalie Emily Carchia and VTC Goalie Ebony Cota both made impressive saves throughout the half and also relied on timely play of their defenders.  The Badgers senior defender Jules Reed made a goal saving stop while backing up Carchia during a rush of offense by the Knights late in the first half to keep the Knights off the board.  The Johnson Badgers offense quickly countered each of the Knights shot attempts.  Behind the legs of Maddie House, Denyce Ruiz and Dulce Nino the Badgers continued to pressure the Knights defense throughout the first half, Cota turning away each of the Badgers attempts.

Coming out of halftime both teams picked up the action where they left off.  The Badgers Maddie House struck quickly with a strike from the middle of the box to put the Badgers on the board with a 1-0 lead.  Vermont Tech's Amy Yando didn't wait long to counter the Badgers goal.  Yando tied the score up just over a minute later following a misplayed ball on the Badgers defensive end that the Knight capitalized on.

The Badgers team continued to pressure the Knights defensive throughout the second half with shot attempts coming from Jordan Pelland, Nino, House and Ruiz.  In total the four Badgers accounted for 30 shot attempts, 11 of which on net.  Cota and the Knights defense turned away the Badgers offense until Freshman Dulce Nino broke free at the 88:44 mark to score an unassisted goal to put the Badgers up 2-1.  The Knights made one last push, but the Badgers defenders held strong and denied the Knight from a final shot on goal.  With the win the Badgers go to 1-0 on the season.

Next up for the Badgers will be a home contest vs Cazenovia College on Saturday @ 12pm during the NVU-Johnson Family/Alumni Weekend.

Go Badgers!
