Women’s Soccer Takes First Win at Home

JOHNSON, VT – The Women's Soccer program had much to celebrate at home this past Saturday, recording their first win of the 2024 season against a strong Paul Smith's team. The Bobcats attacked first, launching two shots on goal within the first eight minutes of play, defended gracefully by first-year goalie, Sophia Johnson. A quick reset by the Badgers found Maddie Power with the ball in the 16th minute, driving a deep shot over the head of Bobcat goalkeeper to put the Badgers ahead 1-nil. Johnson kept their foot on the gas, applying pressure in the moments preceding their second goal in the 17th minute by Olivia Davis, assisted by teammate, Jenna Jones. Sophia Johnson remained perfect between the posts, logging four saves and no goals through the half.

The two teams proved evenly matched for the opening moments of the back half of the game, until the 65th minute, when Shelby Royea connected with Leighton Fenyus from close to midfield on a deep drive, who then put away the ball for the Badgers' third goal of the game. While each team would have opportunities to close or extend the point differential, both goalies remained perfect the remainder of the game, concluding with a 3-0 win for the Johnson Badgers.

Each goal for the Badgers represented the program's first three of the season, making Davis, Fenyus, and Power the current scoring leaders for the Badgers. Sophia Johnson secured five saves in as many shots.

The Badgers return to the pitch Friday, September 6th, at Vermont State University Randolph at 5pm.
