WTEN: Johnson Drops Season Opener to Castleton, 7-2

JOHNSON, VT. – The Johnson State College women's tennis team fell to Castleton 7-2 on Friday afternoon in their first match of the season.

Doubles

Castleton took a 2-1 advantage after doubles.  The teams of Kali Covell (Hartford, Vt.) and Nicole Monick (Bennington, Vt.) and Mikayla Messier (Sheldon, Vt.) and Sam Kershner (Essex, Vt.) each dropped their doubles matches 8-0 and 8-1, respectively. The Johnson duo of Ashley Fogg (White River Junction, Vt.) and Sarah Lind (Winooski, Vt.) won a hard fought third doubles match, 7-6, to give Johnson their first point.

Singles

The Spartans took five of six singles points, with Johnson's lone win coming from Kershner in fifth singles. After splitting their first two sets, Kershner and Alexis Curley went to a super tiebreak, which Kershner took 10-6. Messier also went to the super tiebreak in third singles, but fell short with a 10-4 loss.

Covell and Monick each lost their singles matches in straight sets in first and second singles. Fogg battled in fourth singles but fell short in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. Lind ended the day with a straight sets defeat in sixth flight singles.
