Badgers Fall to Curry and Paul Smith's In Women's Volleyball Opener

JOHNSON, Vt. – Johnson State College fell 3-0 (25-9, 25-8, 25-13) to visiting Curry College and 3-1 (17-25, 25-13, 25-18, 25-12) to visiting Paul Smith's College in season-opening women's volleyball on Saturday at Carter Gym.  Curry (2-0, 0-0 TCCC) down Paul Smith's (1-1, 0-0 USCAA) 3-1 (24-26, 25-9, 25-7, 25-21) in the tri-matches other showdown.  Johnson will host Norwich University on Tuesday, September 4 at 7:00 pm in the next outing.

 

 

Curry 3, Johnson 0 (25-9, 25-8, 25-13)

 

In the season-opener for each team, Curry blanked Johnson 3-0 behind seven kills and five digs from senior Kendra LeMay (Chicopee, Mass.) and 10 assists from sophomore Hannah Robison (Cumberland, R.I.).  Sophomore Courtney DiBiasio (Coventry, R.I.) added six kills to her team-high nine service aces and five digs.  The Colonels stacked up 20 service aces as a team in the match.

Johnson saw freshman Andrea Williams (Thorborn, Nova Scotia/North Nova) record five kills and three digs while senior Kylie VanEtten (Montrose, Penn./Elk Lake) (pictured) had five assists and six digs.

 

Curry 3, Paul Smith's (24-26, 25-9, 25-7, 25-21)

Despite falling in the opening set, Curry rallied for comfortable wins in the next two sets and held off a feisty Paul Smith's club for a 3-1 win to move to 2-0 in the early season.  DiBiasio had 14 kills and seven digs in the match while Robison tallied a whopping 21 assists and 15 digs.  Sophomore Tiana Sturtze (Worcester, Mass.) had six kills, two block solo's and a block assist.

Paul Smith's saw junior Alyssa Fredericks (Van Hornesville, N.Y.) tally 10 assists and 18 digs while Madeleine Sullivan (Horseheads, N.Y.) had five kills to go with 12 digs and freshman Rebecca Psiaki (Ithaca, N.Y.) also had a dozen digs.

 

Paul Smith's 3, Johnson 1 (17-25, 25-13, 25-18, 25-12)

Johnson took the opening set from the visiting Bobcats the PSC would settle in and best the hosts 3-1.  Sophomore Carly Bramer (Amsterdam, N.Y.) had 11 service aces to pace Paul Smith's while Psiaki had a team-high five kills to go with six service aces and eight digs.

The Badgers received 12 assists and 12 digs from VanEtten while Williams piled up 11 kills to go with six digs, four block solo's, and a block assist.

Receiving the serve once again doomed JSC as the Bobcats recorded 30 service aces in the match.
