Johnson falls to Lyndon, Cobleskill in women's volleyball

JOHNSON, Vt. – Johnson State College dropped a pair of non-conference women's volleyball matches on Saturday falling 3-2 (22-25, 25-10, 22-25, 25-22, 15-7) to Lyndon State College and 3-0 (25-13, 25-7, 25-11) to SUNY Cobleskill.  Cobleskill defeated Lyndon on the day's third match 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-19).  Johnson slips to 0-8, 0-0 North Atlantic Conference (NAC), Lyndon now stands at 1-7, 0-0 NAC, and Cobleskill improves to 4-3, 0-0 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) with the pair of victories.  The Badgers will move on to play at Lyndon on Thursday in their next match, also Lyndon's next outing, while Cobleskill will host Castleton State College on Tuesday at 6:00 pm.

 

Lyndon 3, Johnson 2 (22-25, 25-10, 22-25, 25-22, 15-7)

In a back-and-forth affair, visiting Lyndon took the fifth and final set 15-7 to earn a 3-2 victory, their first win on the season.  Johnson took set one but saw the Hornets roll in the second set to tie the match.  The teams would split the next to sets, each winning 25-22, to tie the match but Lyndon would take control in the final set for the triumph.  It was a defensive battle with the two teams combining for 139 digs, 70 by Lyndon and 69 by Johnson.

Hornets' junior Morgan Diltz (Moultonboro, N.H.) compiled eight kills, seven service aces, and 15 digs, sophomore Joy Piper (Belmont, N.H.) had four kills, 13 digs, and 11 assists, and freshman Laura Drake (Hinsdale, Mass.) had a trio of kills, 10 digs, and a team-high 12 assists.

Johnson saw senior Kylie VanEtten (Montrose, Penn./Elk Lake) stack up match-highs of 14 assists and 17 digs and freshman Andrea Williams (Thorborn, Nova Scotia/North Nova) had a match-high 11 kills to go with 15 digs.

 

 

Cobleskill 3, Lyndon 0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-19)

In match two of the day Cobleskill fending off Lyndon to earn a 3-0 victory.  Tremendous attack depth keyed the victory for the Fighting Tigers with six different players recording three or more kills led by sophomore Kady Porterfield (Macdoel, Calif.) and her 11.  Cobleskill nearly doubled Lyndon in kills with a 33-17 final tally for the match. 

Sophomore Casey Holbert (Sauquoit, N.Y.) dealt out 11 assists to go with a pair of digs while junior Amber Baker (Caroga Lake, N.Y.) had a nice five-kill, five-dig, three-assist outing for the Fighting Tigers.

Lyndon was paced by junior Sarah Adams (Alton, N.H.) who had seven kills and five digs and Drake who had six assists, six digs, and five service aces.

 

Cobleskill 3, Johnson 0 (25-13, 25-7, 25-11)

Johnson saw Cobleskill turn up their service game in the final match of the day as the visitors drilled 29 services aces to spark the 3-0 win.  Again, depth was a key for Cobleskill as 10 different players recorded a service ace.

Porterfield again led the way at the net with six kills, Baker had another fine all-around effort with three kills, seven service aces, and two digs, and sophomore Mary Gallagher (Troy, N.Y.) had a match-high 10 assists for Cobleskill.

VanEtten had five digs, three assists, and a service ace for Johnson while Williams had two kills, two block solo's, and two digs.  Junior Emily Himberg (Williston, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) had a pair of kills and pair of digs.
