Johnson Wins Five Set Marathon over Eagles

Johnson State College scored a 3-2, five-set marathon victory over Green Mountain College in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) women's volleyball action on Wednesday evening at the Eagle Dome.

Johnson (4-13, 1-1 NAC) led virtually every single game in the match and had to endure several Green Mountain (1-14, 0-2 NAC) runs throughout the night.

In the first game, the Badgers streaked out to an 8-3 lead until the Eagles made a 7-2 run to tie the game at 10-10 thanks to a pair of Hayley Provost kills and Celeste Bowers aces. From there, JSC streaked ahead to a 21-12 lead and looked to be in cruise control, but the Eagles again rallied from a large deficit edging back to 22-20. A Breanna Laughlin kill combined with an Andrea Williams ace closed out the first game for JSC 25-23.

The second game saw the Eagles take the only game of the match comfortably as Torie Cowell served out the last eight points for the Eagles as they took the game 25-14.

The third game witnessed the Eagles streaking out to an early lead only to be caught by the Badgers. The Eagles' Megan Roy opened up the service game with four points while serving and that held the Badgers at bay until they mounted a slow comeback to knot the game at 9-9. The Badgers then pulled away with an 8-3 run to lead 18-12. The Eagles did not quit, however and roared back to tie the game at 22-22 on a Madison Wage ace. Another ace by Wage gave the Eagles a slim one-point lead and then the teams battled back and forth until two attack errors by the Badgers allowed GMC to take the third game 26-24.

The fourth match was a very tight affair as each team held multiple leads throughout the game, but none larger than five points. At 22-22 an Anna Bingham service ace and an Adrienne Derry kill coupled with an Eagle attack error closed out a 25-22 fourth game victory for the Badgers.

The deciding set was a see saw battle early until the Badgers scored four-straight points to take a commanding 13-7 lead. The Eagles battled back facing game point with three game-saving points, but an Eagle service error gave Johnson the final game point and clinched the match.

Johnson was led offensively by Laughlin who notched nine kills in the contest and was followed by Williams who had five. Laughlin also led the Badgers defensively with 15 digs, while Lauren Hubbert-Severance had 14. Williams tallied four total blocks at the net in the win, while Bingham steered the offense with 14 assists.

Green Mountain received the best match of the year from Wage who led all attackers with 14 kills. She was followed up by Cowell and Provost who had nine and seven kills, respectively. Bowers and Provost stood out defensively for the Eagles with 17 and 11 digs, while Roy engineered the offense with 25 assists.

Green Mountain returns to the court this Saturday with matches against Colby-Sawyer and Castleton as part of an NAC tri-match. Johnson will also be involved in a conference tri-match this Saturday as the Badgers travel to Maine to take on Husson and Maine Maritime.
