Badgers Battle NEC in Season Opener

JOHNSON, Vt.- The Northern Vermont University-Johnson women's volleyball team opened up the 2021 spring season against New England College in Carter Gymnasium on Monday evening. The Badgers took the second set, but it wasn't enough as they dropped the match by a score of 3-1.

Christina Betham led the way for the Badgers racking up 15 kills and four digs. Porsche Johnson added eight kills, seven digs and two blocks. Natalia Medina also contributed seven kills.

The first set was a back and forth match until the Pilgrims were able to string together five-straight points to go up 12-6. The Pilgrims would slowly expand their advantage and finish the opening set by taking six of the last seven points.

In the second set, as neither team could gain much of an advantage. The Badgers would eventually take the second set, despite a late New England College push, 25-23.

NVU-Johnson carried the momentum into the early stages of the third set, by going up 7-3. The two teams would trade the next few points until the Badgers were up 22-17 and ultimately would finish the set 27-25. 

But it would be NEC in the fourth set where they would hold the advantage and finish the match 25-17.

With the loss the Badgers drop to 0-1 on the season and will travel to New England College on Wednesday for a rematch.
