Johnson State Edges Colby-Sawyer, 93-91, in Double Overtime

JOHNSON, VT. – The Johnson State College men's basketball team defeated Colby-Sawyer College 93-91 in double overtime in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) game on Wednesday evening.

The Badgers go to 9-13 on the season and 6-9 in the NAC, while the Chargers move to 10-12 on the season and 7-8 in the conference.

1st Half

The first half was played at a nice pace with little fouling for the majority of the 20 minutes. Colby-Sawyer took its largest lead of the frame (5-2) after a pair of Jourdain Bell free throws 3:14 into the game. Johnson State then used a 13-5 run, capped by a Benjamin Holl (Philadelphia, Pa.) layup, to take a 15-10 lead. The basket at 13:30 gave Holl his 1000th career point. Three minutes later, the Badgers extended their lead to eight after a Kawaun Chavis (Philadelphia, Pa.) trey (24-16). Colby-Sawyer answered with eight straight points with six coming from Milani Hicks to tie the game at 24-24 with 5:39 to play. Johnson State carried a six-point advantage into the final two minutes, but the Chargers scored the final four points of the half to cut their deficit to two at the break, 38-36.

2nd Half

After a trey from Demetrius Slade (Washington, D.C.) put Johnson State in front, 80-76, with two minutes left to play in regulation, Colby-Sawyer answered with a three-pointer from Jourdain Bell on the next possession to pull within one. Each team went scoreless over the next 1:42 seconds until Colby-Sawyer freshman Dana Bean knocked down one of two free throws to tie the game at 80-80 with seven seconds on the clock. The Chargers had a pair of fouls to give and made Johnson State take time off the clock, but the Badgers had a chance at the buzzer as a layup went wide.

1st Overtime

The first overtime began with a layup by Bell for the Chargers and was answered with a Holl jumper on the next trip down the floor. Johnson State took an 84-82 lead later in the extra session on a jumper from Marqwon Wynn. Bell connected on a pair of free throws with 54 seconds left to tie the game. Johnson State had another chance to end the game with a jumper at the buzzer, but it clanged off the rim.

2nd Overtime

The second overtime went back and forth for the first two minutes until a Wynn jumper put Johnson State ahead 90-89 with 2:09 to play. Milan Hicks then hit a three-pointer to push Colby-Sawyer in front 91-90 with 1:16 left before Johnson hit the game-winning three with 14 seconds remaining.

Johnson Leaders

The Badgers were led by Chavis' 28 points. He was 10-21 from the floor and 6-11 from beyond the arc. Holl shot 9-of-16 and finished with 23 points. At the 13:30 mark of the first half, Holl hit a jumper to record his 1000th career point. Junior Marqwon Wynn (Wilmington, Del.) added 18 points. Slade flirted with a triple-double and ended with 10 points, 19 rebounds and six assists. Slade's 19 rebounds set a program record for rebounds in a single game.

Colby-Sawyer Leaders

Colby-Sawyer was led by Jourdain Bell's 26 points. Freshman Dana Bean collected his eighth double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Milani Hicks also had a double-double with 17 points and 11 boards. Junior Taylor Grande and freshman Patrick Coffey added 13 points apiece.
