Comeback Bid Not Enough as Johnson Hosted SUNY Poly

JOHNSON, VT – Vermont State University Johnson Women's Basketball faced the SUNY Poly Wildcats at home Friday evening. After a difficult first quarter that saw Johnson trailing 21-2, the Badgers struck first in the second with a smooth transition from Emily Ward assisting Gabby Wardwell's second basket of the game. Johnson held the SUNY Poly scoreless for two thirds of the second quarter, as the Wildcats scored their first basket of the stanza with just 3:20 remaining. The Badgers would outscore the Wildcats 12-9 in the quarter, highlighted by an 8-2 run, bringing the tally at half to 30-14 in the Wildcats' favor. At the half, Faith Meade and Wardwell would lead the Badgers with 6 points each.

The second half was highlighted by Sasha Khomutetsky's 13 points, eight of which came from two four-point plays. She was joined by teammates Wardell, Meade, and House who combined for 22 points (12, 6, and 4, respectively) to keep the energy high. The Badgers chipped away at the deficit, outscoring the Wildcats by 25-15 in the fourth, but would ultimately come up shy, 66-50.

Notes: Wardwell posted a double double with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Meade scored a season-high 12 points.

Women's Basketball returns to the court on Saturday, February 3 as the Badgers host Morrisville State. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 pm.
